A bedesten is a type of covered market hall which was historically the central building of the commercial districts of an old town or cities, where the most important and precious goods (like gold and jewellery) were kept and sold. The project was granted for the Kırıkhan have been affected drastically from the 2023 Earthquake and aiming to revitalize the life before the incident while respecting bereavements of the habitants and cultural heritage. The concept of project has emerged within the local context and rich cultural background of the Hatay, emphasizing the layers and the coinherence of civilizations, as tree of life. The two significant spatial orientation of the local context as living streets and courtyards have formed two main design alternatives. The commercial facilities have been placed in each incorporating elements of living streets and courtyards design alernatives for prioritizing the revitalization of the city. In the courtyard alternative, a dramatic emphasis on the incident is achieved through a heavy ceiling slab at the entrance, followed by a central inclusive space for gathering and healing through various activities. Conversely, the second alternative features an urban park-square for community encounters. The entrance of the Bedesten is designed to envision a façade that acknowledges pain, while fostering coexistence and healing through a wall washing fountain. This blend of form and function aims to respect the cultural heritage and the resilience of the local community, as they work towards rebuilding their lives.
